Kunst kann viel bewirken. Sie kann große gesellschaftliche Prozesse in Bewegung bringen. Sie kann Spannung erzeugen und Sichtweisen verändern. Sie kann unterhalten und auch manipulieren.

Aber wenn ich an etwas arbeite, mach ich das denn, weil ich die Welt verändern will? Will ich etwas beim Betrachter bewirken? Will ich verkrustete Gedankenwelten in Bewegung bringen?

Keine Ahnung.

Ich mache mir beim Arbeiten eher selten tiefschürfende Gedanken, was ich denn nun sagen will. Oft folge ich dem Prozess, und anscheinend weiß der oft selbst, was er sagen will. Bin ich das, die das gesagt hat?

Ich habe eine tolle Youtuberin entdeckt – Insa Hoffmann. Sie stellte neulich eine verblüffende Frage: „Was hätte ich anders machen können, um beim Malen dieses Bildes noch mehr Freude zu haben?“

Als ich das las, war ich wirklich verdutzt. Die Frage ist so einfach, aber sie ist mir so noch nie in den Sinn gekommen. Natürlich habe ich mir schon gesagt, dass mir mein künstlerisches Arbeiten Freude macht. Aber was muss ich tun, um noch mehr Freude zu bekommen? Freude als Maßstab, Sinn und Inhalt der Arbeit, das hört sich für mich sehr gut an. Freude ist mehr als Spaß. Freude geht in die Tiefe, Freude beinhaltet auch Ernsthaftigkeit, Sinn und Erfülltsein. Freude an sich selbst ist verbunden mit Freude am eigenen Ent-Wickeln. Und darum geht es mir tatsächlich in erster Linie.

Freude ist ein guter Wegweiser.

 

Art can achieve a lot. It can set major social processes in motion. It can create tension and change perceptions. It can entertain and also manipulate.

But when I work on something, am I doing it because I want to change the world? Do I want to effect something in the viewer? Do I want to set encrusted worlds of thought in motion?

I don't know.

When I work, I rarely think deeply about what I want to say. Often I follow the process, and apparently it often knows itself what it wants to say. Is that me who said that?

I discovered a great Youtuber - Insa Hoffmann. She asked an amazing question the other day, "What could I have done differently to have more joy when painting this picture?"

When I read that, I was really perplexed. The question is so simple, but it had never occurred to me in that way before. Of course, I've already told myself that I enjoy my artistic work. But what do I have to do to get even more joy? Joy as a measure, meaning and content of the work, that sounds very good to me. Joy is more than fun. Joy goes deep, joy also includes seriousness, meaning and being fulfilled. Joy in oneself is connected with joy in one's own unfolding. And that's really what I'm primarily concerned with.

Joy is a good guide.
